We undertook a critical project for an automotive electric vehicle client seeking a Senior Project Manager. The client had reviewed numerous CVs from various sources but struggled to find the right fit. However, through our expertise and network, we secured interviews for several highly experienced candidates.
One of our top candidates, despite their impressive background, unfortunately didn’t make the best first impression in the interview. The initial feedback was less than favourable—completely at odds with our own experience of their capabilities.
Rather than allowing this setback to dictate the outcome, we took proactive steps to turn the situation around. We gathered four outstanding references from respected colleagues who had worked closely with the candidate for years. By presenting these glowing endorsements to the client, a second interview was successfully secured—an opportunity for the candidate to truly demonstrate their value.
Just as momentum was building, the Covid-19 pandemic struck, making in-person meetings impossible. Undeterred, we worked closely with the candidate, providing honest discussions, strategic coaching, and ongoing support. As a result, they not only turned things around but also secured the role!
This experience highlights an important question: How many great candidates do companies overlook simply because of an imperfect CV or a less-than-ideal first interview? Nerves, an overly cautious approach, or natural shyness can all contribute to a weaker first impression—but should that mean missing out on exceptional talent?
