Interview Tips: Make Your First Impression Count
Congratulations – you’ve landed an interview! Whether you’re a pro or it’s been years since your last one, the rule remains the same: prepare, prepare, PREPARE!
Here’s a quick guide to help you nail your interview and reduce those nerves. Let’s dive in.
1. Research the Company
Don’t walk into an interview clueless. Learn about the company’s products, services and recent news—visit their website and social media profiles. Use LinkedIn to find out about your interviewer too. This shows you’re serious about the role and gives you questions to ask at the end.
2. Leverage Your Recruitment Consultant
Use your consultant’s knowledge! They know the company’s interview style, typical questions and what the hiring managers value. Make time to discuss your interview strategy with them—they’re there to help you succeed.
3. Know Yourself
This is your chance to reflect on your career achievements. Review the job description and match your experience to their needs. Be ready to discuss your projects and results. And remember—if it’s on your CV, be prepared to talk about it!
4. Get in the Right Mindset
Confidence is key. Greet your interviewer with a firm handshake, eye contact and a smile. Visualise yourself succeeding and approach the interview with enthusiasm. Positive energy will help calm your nerves and set the tone for success.
5. Be Concise Avoid rambling!
Structure your answers with a clear start, middle and end. Describe the situation, your role and the results. You can even bring notes to stay on track—it shows you’ve prepared.
6. Be Transparent About Salary Expectations
If the salary question comes up, be honest. If you’re working with a recruiter, they’ve already shared your expectations. If not, state your ideal salary range while expressing flexibility. Remember, it’s not just about base salary—consider benefits, bonuses and future opportunities too.
7. Ask Questions An interview is a two-way street.
Ask insightful questions to get a feel for the company. A few good ones:
- What are the biggest challenges the company is facing?
- What does the first month in the role look like?
- What do you enjoy most about working here?
- Are there any concerns about me that I can address?
8. Call Your Consultant
Once the interview is done, give your consultant a call. They’ll want to hear your feedback and pass it on to the hiring managers. Plus, they can answer any questions you may have and keep the process moving forward.
Good luck!
